Wants and…

Life’s as unpredictable as your next text,
Mine’s usually say less.
My iMessage not known to comfort those seeking a protest,
Most my convos end faster than a campaign for me to grow dreads,
– I guess I’m too hard headed.

It must be hereditary.
My mother telling me these are traits that won’t fare me well.
Since Lee got married I’ve only shouted her a handful of times, as well.
I barely visit or bell Chris,
Only so much I can blame on being busy and the constraints of my 8-6 shifts.
I’ve only ever forged friendships through institutions,
Maintaining all these real-life bonds is stressing me,
I’m conscious I’ve been giving my girl the best parts of me.
It’s a battle, but I’ve gotta get better at distributing my energy,
I’m still tryna distinguish the things I want from the things I…

Present

Gifted you apologies when that was all I could afford,
I hope to one day grow a hunger like yours,
and devour all the good intentions from the food for thought added to any of our conversations.
But I’ll keep my character critiques of you off the table,
because we both know that’s something you could never stomach.

Drunk and Tired

Salaries are pacifiers for babies
before they are rocked to sleep, so that their dreams can stay just that.
Tired so maybe the bottle might help bring sleep.
Hands are patting and rubbing backs;
The serenity in the sloppiness, the comfort of the confusion,
Like infants being fussed over and attended to,
It’s all there when your inebriated and exhausted,
Trying to escape the pattern from the security in a life that you said you always wanted.

Small Things in our Smaller World

It’s the small things.
Like not closing the door when they leave.
Closing the tap, but not all the way.
Asking you questions about something while you’re on the phone.
Using your new mug and leaving in the sink.
Adding a plate while you’re washing the dishes.
Not watching the tv, but wanting to change the channel once you are.

Like skipping the queue to use the bathroom.
Using the water you ran in the bucket for a bath,
And it not mattering if they ran you water afterwards, because they already used yours.
It’s leaving too small an amount of milk in the carton,
It’s leaving too small an amount of rice in the cooker,
It’s leaving too small an amount of stew in the container.
Now look to God, then ask yourself, what am I supposed to do with that?
